Requesting the support of my regular readers

Dear avid readers of my blog,

As you know, I’ve kept my blog completely ad-free for everyone to access and I hope you enjoy reading my articles as much as I enjoy writing them. I hereby request your support in helping me become an independent communicator on all things space.

The harsh reality is that good quality articles don’t come for free. It is only thanks to a few supporters on Patreon that I’m able to break even with my site maintenance costs. I’d love to publish more content that isn’t done for media publications so as to retain a certain degree of independence. So if you like my work on communicating space exploration and science to the masses and want to see more, I request your support in the form of Patreon.

Why Patreon?

It takes a lot of time and effort to write a good article. One needs to do quite a bit of research, ponder upon the topic and structure it, and then carefully write and edit a piece tailored to its intended audience. To maintain a proper blog covering detailed articles across the board with many such articles is an even bigger effort than the sum of its parts. This type of work and the value it brings cannot sustain if people enjoying the content do not pay in any way.

Why not earn from publications, ads or donations?

There are indeed different ways to earn as a science writer, but each has its caveats.

  • Donations: In my experience, one-time donations haven’t been able to even cover website hosting and domain costs!
  • Ads: Ads are distracting, evil when in the form of tracking ads and they create all the wrong incentives for publishers. This results in publishers prioritizing ad viewing over content, not only affecting the content quality but also frustrating their readers. I don’t think it’s worth slapping ads all over my blog just to get a few bucks.
  • Publications: Writing for media publications is the most common way to earn as a freelance writer and that’s what I do. But it comes at the cost of independent writing; publications filter content to their preferences and whims. Basically, you cannot just write on a topic because it’s important or if it’s cool. Further, consider that most publications earn from ads so the core problem isn’t really solved.

I thus strongly believe that only a direct funding model like Patreon can sustain independent, high-quality and consistent content creation.
