Here is a peek at some lunar samples from China’s [Chang’e 5](https://jatan.space/change-5-landing-site/) nearside landing mission as well as the [Chang’e 6](https://jatan.space/moon-monday-issue-201/) farside one! Holding them is an incredible feeling that vividly reminds you of the immense and irreplaceable [value of exploring our Moon](https://jatan.space/why-explore-the-moon/). 🌙

Check my coverage of the [volcano of new science results](https://jatan.space/moon-monday-issue-252/) presented at the University of Hong Kong last weekend about what we’ve unlocked by studying such Chang’e lunar samples. And, my [idea pitch](https://jatan.space/moon-monday-issue-241/#the-case-for-india-to-study-and-exchange-chang%E2%80%99e-lunar-samples) there for India and China to exchange future [Chandrayaan 4 lunar polar samples](https://jatan.space/moon-monday-issue-241/) with Chang’e ones has garnered some interest at CAS. Here’s hoping something comes out of it if ISRO and CNSA decide to engage. 🚀

## Mission updates

NASA has conducted 8 of 10 integrated tests in the lead up to preparations to launch the crewed Artemis II Moon mission. [Image: NASA](https://www.nasa.gov/missions/artemis/artemis-2/integrated-testing-on-horizon-for-artemis-ii-launch-preparations/)

- NASA [states](https://www.nasa.gov/missions/artemis/artemis-2/nasa-progresses-toward-artemis-ii-moon-mission/) that it has completed critical communications tests between the [SLS rocket](https://www.nasa.gov/reference/space-launch-system/), the [Orion spacecraft](https://www.nasa.gov/feature/meet-nasa-s-orion-spacecraft), and between them and the agency’s Deep Space Network ground stations in the lead up to preparations for launching four [Artemis II](https://jatan.space/moon-monday-issue-242/) astronauts around the Moon and back next year.
- SpaceX’s first Starship v3 booster stage got [damaged during early testing](https://arstechnica.com/space/2025/11/newest-starship-booster-is-significantly-damaged-during-testing-early-friday/) on November 21, leading to yet another delay in SpaceX’s [slow progress](https://jatan.space/moon-monday-issue-248/#nasa-reopens-artemis-iii-human-landing-contract) in working towards landing humans on the Moon for NASA.
- [New datasets](https://shadowcam.im-ldi.com/news/1467) are available from NASA’s ultra-sensitive [ShadowCam](https://shadowcam.sese.asu.edu/about) imager aboard South Korea’s first lunar orbiter [KPLO](https://jatan.space/kplo/). ShadowCam has been capturing [unique](https://www.nasa.gov/feature/nasa-moon-camera-mosaic-sheds-light-on-lunar-south-pole) [observations](http://shadowcam.sese.asu.edu/images/1288) of [permanently shadowed regions](https://jatan.space/permanently-shadowed-regions-on-the-moon/) on the Moon’s poles to [help scientists & engineers plan](https://jatan.space/moon-monday-issue-110/) future surface resource prospecting missions.
- The lifespans of the upcoming [Chang’e 7](https://jatan.space/moon-monday-issue-248/) orbiter and lander is designed to be [at least eight years](https://www.cnsa.gov.cn/english/n6465645/n6465648/c6840870/part/6797907.pdf) each! Thanks to Jack Congram for [noting that](https://www.china-in-space.com/p/change-7-to-start-searching-for-lunar) in his coverage.

- ESA’s critical Ministerial Council meeting held last week to decide the space agency’s budget for the next three years went well as two dozen members (including Canada’s increased investment by 400%) cumulatively committed a [record budget of €22.25 billion](https://spacepolicyonline.com/news/esa-member-states-pledge-record-level-of-funding/), a 17% increase over the previous 3-year budget for 2022-2025 when adjusted for inflation. However, the human and robotic exploration component of the budget is receiving only €2.98 billion, about €800 million less than was requested. As such, this will likely affect ESA’s robotic plans for lunar exploration such as [Argonaut](https://www.esa.int/Science%5FExploration/Human%5Fand%5FRobotic%5FExploration/Exploration/Argonaut) and [Moonlight](https://jatan.space/moon-monday-issue-198/#moonlight-in-motion-and-contrasting-queqiao). In the best case, it will stretch their already delayed timelines further.
- In related and unsurprising news, ESA’s Director General Josef Aschbacher [announced](https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20251127-europe-secures-record-space-budget-to-boost-indepedence) that the three ESA astronauts that will fly on future crewed [Artemis](https://www.nasa.gov/humans-in-space/artemis/) missions will come from three biggest ESA contributors: Germany, France, and Italy. These [three seats](https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-55906695) from NASA are in return for ESA’s contributions to the Artemis [Orion](https://www.nasa.gov/feature/meet-nasa-s-orion-spacecraft) spacecraft’s critical [service module](https://www1.grc.nasa.gov/space/esm) and for providing major parts of the upcoming NASA-led [Gateway](https://www.nasa.gov/gateway) orbital habitat like the [Lunar I-Hab](https://www.esa.int/Science%5FExploration/Human%5Fand%5FRobotic%5FExploration/Gateway%5FLunar%5FI-Hab), the [Lunar Link](https://www.esa.int/Science%5FExploration/Human%5Fand%5FRobotic%5FExploration/Gateway%5FLunar%5FLink) communications module, and the [Lunar View](https://www.esa.int/Science%5FExploration/Human%5Fand%5FRobotic%5FExploration/Gateway%5FLunar%5FView) refueling and cargo module.

## More Moon

- ESA [tested use of multiple instruments](https://www.dlr.de/en/latest/news/2025/water-ice-on-the-moon-simulated-detection-in-the-luna-facility) to map [water ice](https://jatan.space/ultimate-guide-to-water-on-the-moon/) in a mock layered lunar simulant soil setup at the agency’s [LUNA facility](https://jatan.space/moon-monday-issue-195/) so as to optimize the detection and mapping approach of future missions going to the Moon’s poles.
- NASA is [hosting a public challenge](https://www.topcoder.com/nasa-crater-detection) with prizes for solutions which will improve optical recognition of lunar craters, a [technology employed by lunar landers](https://jatan.space/precision-moon-landings-and-the-future/) to navigate with respect to identified terrain, avoid landing on hazardous craters and other such features, and land with precision.
- If you too want to change the frustrating misconception about people at large calling [our Moon’s farside](https://jatan.space/the-two-faced-moon/) as its “dark side”, send them [this rebuttal article](https://bigthink.com/starts-with-a-bang/dark-side-moon/) by Ethan Siegel and blame Pink Floyd and the Transformers.
